Né à Montréal en 1943. Croyant avoir un talent exceptionnel, j’étais encouragé par ma famille de suivre des cours en dessin, en peinture ainsi qu’en sculpture, à un tendre âge. J’ai voyagé beaucoup; cela m’a donné la chance d’admirer les paysages et de rencontrer plusieurs artistes qui peignaient la nature. En les observant et en recevant de nombreux conseils, j’ai ainsi acquis de précieux outils de travail. Un point tournant pour moi, à été quand j’ai passé un après-midi dans l’atelier de Bruno Côté. À partir de ce moment, la couleur est devenue ma passion. Plus tard, j’ai étudié à l’école North Light Art School aux Etats-Unis, spécifiquement la technique de mixage des couleurs pour obtenir des teintes vives et pures, en plus de maîtriser l’art d’harmoniser et d’agencer la couleur et la composition d’un tableau. Je me considère un artiste autodictate. Des années de recherche ont abouti à l’application de l’acrylique avec spatule sur un support de panneau de bois. Pour mieux comprendre mes tableaux, je dois expliquer qu’ils sont inspirés de mes dix années de travail au Théâtre des Variétés de Gilles Latulippe. Ils contiennent trois éléments. 1) Les personnages incarnent de petites anecdotes da la vie. Une mini pièce de théâtre souvent plutôt vaudeville. Le titre explique la scène. 2) Le paysage représente la toile de fond (Backdrop) et il y en avait des belles au Théâtre des Variétés. Un « must » pour donner de l’ambiance aux comédiens. Notez que le design des maisons a deux particularités: tout d’abord l’aspect croche symbolise le mouvement et l’âme de la maison. Ensuite, la déformation est un amalgame de deux perspectives. Une vue par-devant et l’autre, avec notre imagination, vu de l’intérieur du tableau en se plaçant derrière les maisons. Une inspiration de Picasso avec ses multiples perspectives du visage. 3) La couleur. Je me décris avant tout comme un coloriste. Mon but principal est d’explorer la couleur avec toute son intensité. Comme un enfant qui voit une balle rouge, pour lui, elle est rouge et non vieux rose, rouge vin, etc. J’adhère cependant en grande partie aux principes de la couleur formulés par les impréssionnistes. Gilles Falardeau was born in Montreal, in 1943. "Believing I was gifted with exceptional talent, I was encouraged by my family at a very young age to follow courses in drawing, painting and sculpture. I traveled extensively throughout Quebec, Ontario as well as the United-States. This gave me the opportunity to admire many different landscapes, and to meet several artists specialized in painting nature. By observing them and through their expert advice, I slowly acquired solid working tools for what would later become my vocation- a full-time artist... The turning point for me was the afternoon I spent in Bruno Côté’s studio. From then on, colour became my passion. Later, I went to study at the North Light Art School in the United States, with a specific training on the technique of mixing colours, so I could obtain hues that would be bright and pure, in addition to mastering the art of harmonizing and matching colours and perfecting the composition of a painting. I consider myself to be a self-taught artist. Years of research resulted in my present technique of applying acrylic colours with a palette knife on a wood panel. For a better understanding of my paintings, I must explain that they are mainly inspired by my ten years of work at the Théâtre des Variétés of Gilles Latulippe. Here are the three main elements that I think best describe my works : 1) The characters are all incarnations of little daily life anecdotes. Each painting to me is a little play, mostly in the vaudeville spirit. The title of the painting always explains the action. 2) The landscape is there as a backdrop for the characters, to give spirit to them, just like the backdrops of a theatre give spirit to the comedians. Concerning the specific design of the houses, they are characterized by two things ; first, the non-symetrical shapes symbolize the movement of the soul of the house, as well as presenting a combination of two different perspectives ( one viewed from the front, and the other viewed from the back of the houses, with a little help from our imagination ). Picasso, with his different perspectves of the human face, is definitely one of my inspirations... 3) Colour. I describe myself before anything as a colourist. My main goal is to explore colour in all its intensity ; just like a kid who sees a red ball, and refuses to think it could be pink or dark red.
